To combat the sense that every day feels the same, wellness podcast host and author Liz Moody recommends a simple approach: the “novelty rule.”

Speaking on an August 2024 episode of her podcast, Moody described the practice as a way to extend the perceived length and satisfaction of life. “It gets rid of that feeling that every day is the same,” she said.

The rule encourages intentionally incorporating small, new experiences into one’s weekly routine. “Once a week, I try to fit in at least one novelty activity,” said Moody. “These can be really small.” Examples include taking a different route home, trying a new recipe, or wearing a watch on the opposite wrist.

Moody, who studied psychology and has spent six years interviewing wellness experts, bases the rule on research by Stanford neuroscientist David Eagleman. According to Eagleman’s book "Livewired," novel experiences rewire brain circuits, making time feel slower and life more vibrant. As people age and encounter fewer surprises, this deliberate exposure to new stimuli can counteract that effect.

Supporting the science, neurologist Dr. Richard Restak advised in 2024 to “avoid boredom, stay challenged” to maintain cognitive health.

Moody emphasizes planning novelty. “What we calendar in, actually happens,” she noted, suggesting people schedule their novelty activities monthly to benefit from the joy of anticipation.

Among her most memorable experiences are novelty-based activities such as visiting animal farms or attending a murder-mystery party with her father. “It has woken my life up in a way that I didn’t think was possible,” Moody said.
