Tina Knowles revealed that she enrolled her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange, in therapy as children to foster a strong and lasting sibling bond during their formative years.

Speaking in a recent interview with Gayle King, Knowles shared that she made the decision when Beyoncé was around 12 and Solange was about 7, after noticing a growing distance between them. “I just started seeing this separation, and I said ‘Oh no. Y’all are gonna grow up close,’” she said.

At the time, Beyoncé was gaining local recognition and had joined a girls' singing group. The group practiced at the Knowles’ home, and Solange, who was too young to join, tried to participate but often felt left out. Knowles recalled that other group members sometimes said unkind things to Solange and that Beyoncé did not intervene, prompting her to take action.

Despite resistance from family members—including her then-husband Mathew Knowles, who said, “I don’t want any parts of that”—Knowles proceeded with counseling. “My family was upset,” she said, noting that therapy was a taboo topic at the time.

In addition to counseling, Knowles dedicated specific days to spend one-on-one time with each daughter to ensure they felt equally supported. “On Wednesday I took off work and that was Solange’s day,” she said.

Knowles has previously spoken about her own childhood experience of feeling less favored than her brother and wanted to ensure her daughters did not grow up with similar feelings. “It made [Beyoncé] way more sensitive and protective,” she said. “And they’re still fiercely protective of each other.”
