Tennis champion Serena Williams and tech entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian are taking a hands-on approach to teaching their daughter about money, starting with a $7 weekly allowance.

In a video posted to X on April 24, Ohanian revealed that their 7-year-old daughter Olympia earns her allowance by completing chores five days a week, including feeding the dog, putting clothes in a hamper, and making her bed. “She gets $7 a week. Serena was her lawyer in the negotiation,” Ohanian said. “I drew up a real contract ... Her mom was her counsel, which was really frustrating.”

The couple, despite their substantial wealth, say they aim to instill values of discipline and responsibility in their children. Williams, with an estimated net worth of $340 million, and Ohanian, whose net worth was estimated at $70 million in 2019, are both active startup investors.

According to Ohanian, Olympia once saved $100 on her own but needed $125 for a watch. “We’re trying to create that flywheel between doing the work and getting the money,” he explained. “We’re trying to build the muscle: work = reward.”

The couple also has a younger daughter, Adira, aged one. Both Williams and Ohanian started working young — Williams turned pro in tennis at 14, and Ohanian co-founded Reddit at 22, selling it to Condé Nast at 23.

Balancing a privileged lifestyle with frugality, Ohanian emphasized the importance of patience and effort: “I need [Olympia] to feel that little bit of pain of, like, ‘Ugh, I gotta wait two more weeks for that paycheck.’” Ohanian added that good things come when you work for them.
