Dr. Katharine Esty, a 90-year-old social psychologist and psychotherapist, has outlined her personal guide to aging with happiness and vitality, offering 10 "non-negotiables" she says help her remain healthy, sharp, and joyful.

Reflecting on her ninth decade of life, Esty expressed surprise not at the challenges of aging, but at the unexpected joys it brings. “I’m truly grateful for my family and the life I have lived,” she shared. “This sense of gratitude is relatively new for me.”

Among her top recommendations is kindness, especially toward oneself. “We tend to berate ourselves mercilessly,” Esty observed, encouraging self-compassion as a daily practice. Gratitude, practiced each morning, is another pillar she credits for her grounded mindset.

She emphasized the importance of routines to simplify daily life and maintain independence—such as placing her phone in only three designated spots to avoid losing it. Staying connected to loved ones, living purposefully through community projects and hobbies, and processing grief also play central roles in her approach.

Esty, who remains engaged through writing and community leadership, advocates for lifelong learning, having recently taken up conversational French. She links happiness not to avoiding hardship, but to choosing a positive attitude and focusing on the present.

Finally, Esty champions the power of laughter, recalling a recent comedy class with fellow retirees: “We had so much fun and laughed throughout the class. I felt tremendous joy, fully aware that I was part of the great human comedy that is life itself.”

With a career spanning 30 years in psychotherapy, Esty continues to share insights rooted in experience and evidence, proving that contentment and growth are possible at any stage of life.
