When faced with a rude or condescending comment, a simple five-word question can be a powerful tool for maintaining composure and asserting boundaries, according to a public speaking expert.

Rather than reacting with sarcasm or anger, calmly asking "Do you really mean that?" can quickly shut down inappropriate behavior while preserving dignity and professionalism. Speech trainer and author John Bowe described the phrase as "quietly disarming and deceptively powerful."

The technique works by prompting reflection, as most rude remarks are not calculated but "tossed off without forethought," the expert explains. Responding with curiosity, not defensiveness, encourages the speaker to reconsider their words. This approach effectively "holds up a mirror," allowing the person to retract or rephrase.

It also shifts the power dynamic. Instead of being caught off guard, the person on the receiving end reclaims control without escalating the situation. The responsibility for the rudeness remains with the speaker.

Common workplace comments such as "You look tired" or "Do you have any idea what you’re doing?" often carry implicit insults. In more personal settings, remarks like "You’re still single?" or "You should smile more" can be equally undermining. In each case, the five-word response invites reconsideration without confrontation.

However, the expert notes that not all rude remarks require a reply. "Sometimes, the best thing you can do is let it roll off your back." But when a response is needed, this phrase provides a calm, clear alternative to conflict — one that can preserve both self-respect and the relationship.
